New technique helps doctors deliver bad news

A technique called SPIKES (setting, perception, invitation, knowledge, empathy and strategy/summary) helps doctors deliver bad news to patients in a more compassionate way. As part of the six-step process, physicians take the time to make sure that patients understand what is being said and do not use too much medical terminology, according to an article in the Baltimore Sun.
