Skin cancer screening tour encourages visits to the dermatologist
Healthcare Strategist Trend Watch, August 4, 2006
A campaign to raise awareness of the importance of skin cancer screenings has been a success, organizers say. At each stop on the tour, local dermatologists volunteer their time in the 38-foot mobile diagnosis vehicle and perform free skin cancer examinations in two fully-equipped exam rooms. Sponsored by the Fairfield, NJ-based Bradley Pharmaceuticals and The Skin Cancer Foundation, the volunteers have screened more than 3,400 individuals. Of those, 40% were identified as requiring further medical attention for a cancer-related skin condition.
Information about the tour has appeared in more 250 newspapers and national magazines and on numerous local TV and radio stations, organizers said. In addition, a cancer awareness campaign in major media outlets across the country urges people to be screened whether aboard the mobile unit or by their local dermatologist.
