Safety Lady FAQs

While not considered "virtual", the Safety Lady is available to answer your safety related questions that are specific to the laboratory. Here are some that have crossed her desk:

Can lab staff launder scrubs and lab coats at home?

It depends on whether they are classified as PPE or not. Usually lab coats are considered PPE and must be laundered onsite our by an outside contract laundry that has machines that get the hot water up to 160 degrees F. Scrubs are usually considered a uniform, so they can be laundered at home.

Are students covered under OSHA?

No. OSHA standards apply to employees; however, the facility has a moral obligation to provide the same PPE for students working with blood and body fluids as they do employees. (e.g., lab coat and gloves). Training of students on safety measures is the responsibility of the education program, with the lab providing orientation safety training once the student is onsite.
