New law exposes number of felons in nursing homes
LTC Liability Monitor, July 26, 2006
More than 1,000 convicted felons live in Illinois nursing homes, reports the Galesburg (IL) Register-Mail. This data was tallied following recent legislation requiring nursing homes in the state to report to the public health department the names of residents who have certain felony convictions, according to the report. The law includes requirements for background checks on new admissions by state police, private rooms for sex offenders, and security measures. In many cases, it's not illegal for nursing homes to care for convicted felons if they meet the medical criteria for admission, but resident advocates say they believe Illinois nursing homes accept more of these residents to fill empty beds, reported the Register-Mail.
