Facility penalized for resident death
LTC Liability Monitor, July 26, 2006
Following a resident death, a South Toledo, OH nursing home will pay a fine of nearly $60,000 and put corrective policies in place to improve survey deficiencies, reported the Toledo (OH) Blade. A resident with dementia and a history of assaults at the nursing home was charged with murdering his roommate, an Alzheimer's patient, after the demented resident beat him with a towel bar, reports stated. A court ruled the defendant was incompetent to stand trial, but the facility will shoulder much of the responsibility for corrective action. The state health department cut off Medicare and Medicaid payments for new admissions for a short time, according to the Blade. Reimbursement was reinstated after the state found the facility back in compliance with federal regulations such as abuse, neglect, and misappropriation of residents' property, according to reports.
