Family sues nursing home for relative's death
LTC Liability Monitor, July 19, 2006
Not only should your facility develop policies to prevent resident falls, but procedures should also outline proper care of a resident who suffered a fall as well as proper notification of family members. The before and after effects of a resident fall are still being felt at a Bedford, IN, nursing home. One family filed a suit this week against the facility for negligence pertaining to a fall, reported the Times-Mail in Bedford. The complaint alleges that the resident died as the result of a fall she suffered in May 2005 at the nursing home. The family cited the following claims against the facility:
* Failure to follow physician's orders
* Failure to follow facility policies and procedures regarding the use of gait belts during transfers
* Failure to adequately train staff
* Failure to maintain acceptable parameters of hydration, monitor changes in medical condition, and notify family of changes
