Younger patients less trusting of physicians

Physician Practice Advisor, July 19, 2006

Young patients are less likely to be satisfied with and have confidence in their physicians when compared with older generations, according to a survey by Press Ganey Associates, Inc.

The survey of more than 1.1 million patients revealed that 72% of adults born after 1964 were extremely satisfied with their physician. However, that number rose to 77% for Baby Boomers (i.e., patients born between 1946 and 1964) and 79% for patients born before 1946.

The survey found that the amount of time a physician spent with a patient was one of the most consistent drivers of patient satisfaction among all age groups. Physicians who spend an average of three minutes longer with their patients-18 minutes instead of 15-can significantly decrease their chances of a malpractice lawsuit, Melvin F. Hall, PhD, president and CEO of Press Ganey, said in a press release.
