New ASC payment plan announcement coming soon
Ambulatory Surgery Reimbursement Update, July 18, 2006
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is expected to announce its new payment plan for ambulatory surgery centers (ASCs) sometime next month, although sources close to Ambulatory Surgery Regulatory Update indicated that the announcement could come as early as later this week.
It is expected that CMS will include this new payment system with its proposed hospital outpatient payment rule. CMS has yet to indicate the basis for the new payment plan, although industry experts have speculated it could be a percentage of hospital outpatient payment rates or an entirely new system.
This new system is required by law to go into effect in January 2008.
CMS is also expected to release the proposed list of changes to the ASC list of Medicare-approved procedures within the next several weeks.
