2008 Goals may include anticoagulants, abbreviations changes

Pharmacy Regulation Resource, July 13, 2006

Anticoagulant management and an extension of "Do Not Use" abbreviations to computerized information may appear in the 2008 National Patient Safety Goals, according to recent presentations from JCAHO officials.

The anticoagulant goal had been proposed for the 2007 list and was not acted on, but it's one of the top possibilities for the 2008 Goals, JCAHO surveyor Darryl Rich, PharmD, MBA, FASHP, told attendees at the American Society for Health-System Pharmacists Summer Meeting last month.

In addition, the JCAHO's "Do Not Use" list may extend to include rules for computer-generated forms and displays, said Richard Croteau, MD, executive director for patient safety initiatives for the Joint Commission International Center for Patient Safety. Croteau made the remarks during a Joint Commission Resources audioconference last month.

The JCAHO may also add the use of "<" and ">" symbols and acronyms for drug names to the 2008 list, which will be announced sometime next year.

Read more about these presentations in the upcoming August issue of Hospital Pharmacy Regulation Report.
