Reducing cancer treatment side effects with exercise

Respiratory Care Weekly, July 12, 2006

Patients on both radiation and chemotherapy treatments can reduce their side effects through an exercise program, according to a study in the July Supportive Care in Cancer. Researchers showed that exercise specifically can help reduce weight gain or loss, fatigue, nausea, and vomiting from such treatments.

"Improvement in physical function, such as the ability to climb a flight of stairs or walk a certain distance, is an important outcome because it greatly impacts patients with jobs and children," one author said. "Exercise can reduce recovery time and help patients feel better as they deal with the side effects of cancer treatment."
