Q&A: How can I make training for lab staff more exciting?
Lab Safety Advisor, June 20, 2006
Q: How can I make staff training more exciting?
A: Make it interactive and make it relevant. Public health associations such as the American Red Cross and the National Safety Council often run national safety awareness campaigns that you can leverage to make your training more effective. Based on your own lab's past practices, or to take advantage of national campaigns, you might schedule sessions focused on particular topics, such as:
- Eye safety in March
- General safety in June
- Ergonomics in September
- Fire safety in October
Inspection or audit deadlines from accrediting agencies such as JCAHO may also influence your training schedule. You will want to ensure that your records demonstrate that your staff has received complete and up-to-date training during any scheduled audit or inspection.
