Missouri passes malpractice insurance reform law

Physician Practice Advisor, July 12, 2006

Missouri Governor Matt Blunt has signed into law a medical malpractice insurance reform bill designed to make the rate-setting process in the state more transparent, according to a report by the Kansas City Business Journal.

The bill will make self-financed malpractice insurers subject to state reporting requirements, which will require insurers to report actual rates charged. To improve transparency, the state insurance director will establish risk-reporting categories for each physician specialty.

In addition, the bill prohibits insurers from raising rates by more than 15% or from refusing to renew a policy without providing 60 days' written notice.
