CMS issues exemption to proof-of-citizenship law

Physician Practice Advisor, July 12, 2006

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has issued exemptions to regulations that took effect on July 1 requiring Medicaid beneficiaries and applicants to provide proof of citizenship in order to receive benefits, reports The Washington Post.

The exemptions apply to seniors and people with disabilities who are already enrolled in Medicare or Supplemental Secuirty Income programs because they have already provided documentation to enroll in those programs.

As reported in the July 5 Physician Practice Advisor, nine plantiffs have filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Human Services, challenging the legality of the new law.
