Jails computerize standard medical screening process for new inmates

E-Health Trend Watch, July 7, 2006

The Department of Health and Mental Hygiene in New York has computerized the standard medical screening process for newly arriving inmates. The move has eliminated a paper-based system of records that often did not travel with the inmates.

The computerized system allows medical workers to look up medical histories of repeat inmates using identification numbers. It also lets workers generate requests for medical and mental health problems quickly and accurately. The system cost $200,000.
