South Dakota consumers uninterested in charges posted online
E-Health Trend Watch, June 30, 2006
Sioux Valley Hospitals and Health System in Sioux Falls, SD, posted online charges and length-of-stay information for its 25 most frequent procedures. The move was in response to a state mandate. However, despite the push for consumer-driven healthcare, residents of South Dakota haven't been visiting the site to view the hospital's price information.
To put matters into perspective, a Web page of baby pictures called the Cradle Roll is consistently the most-frequented location on the Sioux Valley site. The employment opportunities page ranks second in terms of page views. The hospital charges page ranked 71st.
