Links lead to physical aggression in residents

LTC Liability Monitor, June 28, 2006

Nursing home residents with dementia who suffer from depressive symptoms, delusions, hallucinations, and constipation also act out physical aggression, according to the Archives of Internal Medicine. About 6.8% of U.S. nursing home residents are physically aggressive every week-hitting, shoving, scratching, or sexually abusing others, the report said. This aggression can inflict physical and psychological harm on staff and other residents, according to background information in the article. Verbal aggression, when residents threaten, scream, or curse at others, also can cause difficulties.
Of 103,344 residents studied, 6.9% had been physically aggressive in the week before their assessment and 10.5% had been verbally abusive, reported the Archives.
