Senator Clinton to introduce privacy legislation

Ambulatory Surgery Reimbursement Update, June 27, 2006

A privacy bill of rights that better enforces medical privacy protections and sets clear rules on government intelligence techniques is necessary to secure consumer interests, according to Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-NY).

Clinton announced in a release that she will introduce legislation to

  • put "real teeth" into HIPAA by holding violators accountable
  • require nationwide notification of privacy breaches
  • give consumers the right to sue companies for security lapses
