GAO finds HHS IT security weaknesses
E-Health Trend Watch, June 16, 2006
The Government Accountability Office has found that the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and Medicare had "significant weaknesses" in controls designed to protect the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of IT systems. Some examples of the weaknesses were found in network management, accounts, passwords, and auditing and monitoring of security-related events.
HHS has responded, saying that the evaluation didn't account for recent IT improvements instituted as recently as December 2005.
