IHI's 100,000 Lives Campaign exceeds goal

Healthcare Strategist Trend Watch, June 16, 2006

United States hospitals participating in an 18-month effort to prevent 100,000 unnecessary deaths by improving patient care have exceeded the goal, according to a release from the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI). Hospitals enrolled in the IHI's 100,000 Lives Campaign collectively prevented an estimated 122,300 avoidable deaths since its inception, according to the release.

Started by IHI in December 2004, the campaign enrolled more than 3,000 hospitals that pledged to implement up to six evidence-based quality improvement initiatives. Using 2004 statistics from the participating hospitals as a baseline, the final number was achieved by calculating the number of expected deaths at participating hospitals minus the observed deaths after adjusting for patient volumes and risk, according to the IHI Web site.
