Corticosteroids may decrease preemie respiratory problems

Respiratory Care Weekly, June 14, 2006

When pregnant moms at risk of giving early birth take repeated doses of corticosteroids, it lessens the likelihood of respiratory problems for the child, according to the June 10 Lancet. The data came from a 23-hospital study in Australia, including 982 mothers and their 1,146 children.

"These short-term results are promising but the results of the two-year and early school-age follow-up for the children in the [study] are needed to provide information about the later health and development of the children," said study leader Professor Caroline Crowther from the University of Adelaide, Australia's Discipline of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
