Federal government creates avian flu watch system
Respiratory Care Weekly, June 14, 2006
The U.S. government will be watching more closely for the spread of avian flu among wild birds. On June 8, the United States Agency for International Development announced it will give $5 million to support a new, global initiative that will monitor wild bird populations for the disease, according to the New York-based Wildlife Conservation Society.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention already chipped in $1 million for the project, called the Global Avian Influenza Network for Surveillance. The network will track and document strains of bird flu among wild and migratory bird populations around the world, marking their spread, reported the Wildlife Conservation Society.
