Governor visits new surgery center

Ambulatory Surgery Reimbursement Update, June 14, 2006

The governor of Utah visited a nine-month-old ambulatory surgery center (ASC) last week to tour the facility and speak with staff and patients of the facility, according to the Deseret Morning News.

Governor Jon Huntsman Jr. was joined by Senator Michael Waddoups (R-West Jordan) who chairs the Privately Owned Health Care Organization Task Force. The task force is developing legislation to improve transparency of costs, patient choice, and reform the state's insurance industry. Some ambulatory surgery industry leaders claim that insurers restrict patients' options by limiting their coverage of ASCs.

"Right now, the insurance provider, in most cases, directs (patients) where they can go," said Jeff Love, Mt. Ogden Surgical Center administrator and president of the Utah Ambulatory Surgery Center Association, according to the Deseret Morning News. "Many very capable, very excellent heathcare providers are left out by health insurance plans."
