ECGs transmitted wirelessly

E-Health Trend Watch, June 9, 2006

Emergency medical technicians can transmit electrocardiograms (ECG) to a cardiologist's handheld device. The process results in heart attack patients receiving clot removal in half the time, according to cardiologists at Duke University Medical Center and NorthEast Medical Center in North Carolina.

The American College of Cardiology recommends that heart attack patients have their arteries opened within 90 minutes of arriving at a hospital. NorthEast Medical Center was able to cut the time to 50 minutes by transmitting ECGs wirelessly.
