Brigham and Women's Hospital using ultrasound technology to track patients
E-Health Trend Watch, June 9, 2006
Hospital officials at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston have started experimenting with using ultrasound technology to address their need for a system that tracks patients. The hospital received a $3.1 million grant from the National Library of Medicine.
The project, called SMART (Scalable Medical Alert and Response Technology), allows the hospital to monitor the patient's location and vital signs using waist packs containing sensors, transmitters, and tracking gear. Depending on the results of the experiment, the devices could be used during events like Hurricane Katrina, where keeping tabs on a large number of patients and their whereabouts in the hospital could be vital.
