Personal injury lawsuits filed against Pfizer
Healthcare Strategist Trend Watch, June 9, 2006
A pair of personal injury lawsuits has been filed against Pfizer Inc. charging the drug company with concealing health risks associated with the anti-cholesterol medication Lipitor.
The suits accuse Pfizer of deceptive marketing practices and allege the company promoted Lipitor as a drug with minimal health risks, while failing to warn physicians and patients of side effects that include nerve damage, memory loss, and other cognitive impairment. The aggressive marketing of Lipitor, including physician-supported education groups, helped the drug become the best selling drug in the world with sales exceeding $12 billion in 2005.
A Pfizer spokesman said that Lipitor is the most analyzed and examined drug in its class and "in all probability, the history of the world," according to The New York Post. The spokesman said the claims are "complete fiction" and that Lipitor is "a remarkably safe drug."
