New CMS forms require NPI before 2007 deadline

Physician Practice Advisor, June 7, 2006

Although roughly one year remains before National Provider Identifier (NPI) use is required for all healthcare providers, recent changes to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) enrollment forms may force providers to obtain NPI sooner.

Beginning June 5, 2006 practices must use new Medicare enrollment forms, which were unveiled on May 1, 2006. The new forms require the submission of the NPI and a copy of NPI notification furnished by the National Plan and Provider Enumeration System.

Healthcare providers are required to obtain an NPI no later than May 23, 2007, but CMS urges providers to apply before that date to ensure the NPI is incorporated into their systems, according to a CMS press release.
