No fines levied from HIPAA privacy law violations
Ambulatory Surgery Reimbursement Update, June 6, 2006
Despite receiving more than 19,000 alleged violations of the HIPAA privacy law over the past three years, the government has yet to impose any civil fines and has prosecuted just two criminal cases, according to a story in the Washington Post.
The government has addressed more than 14,000 of these cases, allowing health organizations to address problems raised in the allegations to avoid penalties or ruling that there was no violation.
"Our first approach to dealing with any complaint is to work for voluntary compliance. So far it's worked out pretty well," said Winston Wilkinson, head of the Department of Health and Human Services' Office of Civil Rights, which enforces the law, according to the Washington Post.
