ASC leaders meet with CMS administrator
Ambulatory Surgery Reimbursement Update, June 6, 2006
Leaders in the ambulatory surgery center (ASC) community met with Mark McClellan, MD, administrator for the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, on May 26 to discuss CMS' upcoming ASC payment reform regulation, according to a press release from the American Association of Ambulatory Surgery Centers (AAASC).
The discussion, that was described in the press release as "comprehensive and candid" by Craig Jeffries, AAASC executive director, saw McClellan restate CMS' plan to implement a new ASC payment system by January 1, 2008.
Indications are that CMS is leaning toward linking the new ASC payment rates to the rates paid to hospital outpatient departments (HOPDs), according to the press release. CMS may also expand the ASC list of Medicare covered procedures to include all HOPD procedures except for those posing a patient safety risk.
