Hospital staff to wear alarms

Healthcare Security Weekly, May 1, 2006

The murder of a nurse pressed Hotel-Dieu Grace Hospital in Windsor, ON to purchase personal alarm locators for its 2,000 employees and volunteers, the Windsor Star reports. In mid-May, staff will be equipped with a device about the size of a pager that alerts security staff of their identity and location when activated. The device also sounds an alarm and activates lights in the vicinity, alerting co-workers of possible danger.

The Ontario Nurses Association (ONA) welcomes the new security measures. "I'm glad they're investing in safety," said Vicki McKenna, ONA vice-president. Other recent security measures include how-to training on de-escalating situations and breaking out of a hold. McKenna hopes other hospitals will step-up their safety precautions.
