AMA travels country to raise awareness of Medicare cuts
Ambulatory Surgery Reimbursement Update, May 31, 2006
The American Medical Association (AMA) made stops in several cities in Connecticut last week as part of its ongoing efforts to drum up support against looming Medicare physician payment cuts, according to an AMA press release.
"Medicare payments are scheduled for cuts of 37% over the next nine years, while at the same time the government estimates that the cost of caring for patients will rise 22%," said Rebecca J. Patchin, MD, AMA trustee, according to the press release. "Unfortunately, drastic Medicare cuts will force physicians to make difficult practice changes. Connecticut's disabled patients, its seniors, and its retiring Baby Boomers all deserve better."
The association made stops in New Haven, New London, Hartford, and Waterbury, where it met with local physicians and the media as part of the AMA's National House Call campaign. Through the campaign, representatives from the AMA and physician leaders travel the country to speak to local doctors and the media about the looming payment cuts.
