Three-fourths of insurance claims filed electronically

Physician Practice Advisor, May 31, 2006

Three-quarters of all health insurance claims are now filed electronically, according to a study by America's Health Insurance Plans (AHIP).

The rate of electronic filing has more than tripled in the past decade, with much of the growth coming in the past four years-44% of claims were filed electronically in 2002 compared to 75% today. According to the survey, insurers processed 98% of accepted electronic claims within 30 days of receipt and returned one in seven claims as "incomplete or incorrect."

The study also notes that it costs an insurance company an average of $0.85 to process a "clean" claim submitted electronically compared to $1.58 to process a paper claim.
