Studies show effects of using inhaler spacers and nebulizers
Respiratory Care Weekly, May 31, 2006
Nebulizers and inhaler spacers stave off an equal amount of hospital visits, according to a review of studies appearing in The Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews 2006, Issue 2. The record also shows that spacers might cut the length of hospital stay for children admitted because of asthma. More research will determine the results' accuracy in a broader setting than emergency rooms, study authors said.
"For adults seen and assessed for acute asthma, this review found no significant differences between the two delivery methods," the authors write. "Consequently, the choice of delivery method should reflect patient preference, practice situations, and formal economic evaluation."
