Family awarded $18 million in Idaho resident's death
LTC Liability Monitor, May 25, 2006
The relatives of an 86-year-old former nursing home resident were awarded $18 million by an Idaho jury this week, according to the Associated Press (AP). The family had sought $20 million following the death of the man in 1995, allegedly from repeated doses of the power anti-psychotic medication Haldol. The jury found that staff members at Valley Vista Care Center in St. Maries, ID, had committed hundreds of violations of federal nursing home regulations, including overmedicating the resident to control his elopement tendencies.
Valley Vista intends to appeal the verdict, the AP reported, and a spokesman said the nursing home "stands behind" the care it provided to the deceased resident.
