Study: Steroids can't prevent asthma

Respiratory Care Weekly, May 24, 2006

Researchers hoped to show that inhaled steroids could not only address asthma symptoms in children but also prevent the worsening of the disease. Unfortunately, though, they came up short, according to the May 12 New England Journal of Medicine.

The study, called Prevention of Early Asthma in Kids, was a trial at six centers across the United States. It worked on the hypothesis that constant steroid doses would boost the immune system to the point where the medication would prevent exacerbations. While the drugs lessened symptoms, they came right back once the study subjects stopped taking the steroids.
