Medicare to focus on preventative services

Physician Practice Advisor, May 24, 2006

With the May 15 Medicare prescription drug plan enrollment deadline passed, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) will turn its attention to increasing beneficiaries' use of preventative services, CMS Administrator Mark McClellan said during a luncheon sponsored by the Council for Affordable Health Insurance, according to a report by The Commonwealth Fund.

Preventive services within Medicare include a one-time physical for new enrollees, cardiovascular screening, cancer screenings, and flu shots.

McClellan said CMS would launch a campaign to raise awareness by working with community organizations across the country. McClellan also said that health savings accounts are likely to be part of the coverage choices offered to Medicare beneficiaries next year, according to the article.
