Study finds quality report data faulty

E-Health Trend Watch, May 19, 2006

According to a study by RAND Corp., quality report cards based on payment or administrative data can be subject to grade inflation as can medical chart information. The study suggests that electronic medical records (EMR) should be used instead. The report concludes that performance scores based on administrative data alone overestimate healthcare quality. The study was published in the February Medical Care.

The study adds support to recommendations for using EMRs, adding that capturing clinical data electronically would give a boost to quality improvement efforts.
