HHS Secretary makes plea for pricing transparency
Healthcare Strategist Trend Watch, May 19, 2006
Health and Human Services Secretary Mike Leavitt called health information technology "an essential tool" in the efficient gathering of data on healthcare prices and quality, adding it would give consumers more control over their care and help control skyrocketing costs.
In an op-ed article published in The Hill, Leavitt wrote that if consumers are given useful information, such as the availability and cost of procedures, hospital ratings, and insurance coverage, they become "better consumers of healthcare, and that helps people get healthcare costs down."
