Study: A few extra pounds won't hurt

LTC Liability Monitor, May 18, 2006

Being slightly overweight is not necessarily harmful to people 80 years or older, according to a study appearing in the American Journal of Epidemiology. Researchers at the University of California at Irvine and the University of Southern California examined body mass indices and mortality rates among seniors in Southern California, reported United Press International (UPI).

Study participants in their 80s and 90s who were considered overweight by the body mass index (BMI) scale had lower mortality rates than those who were in the normal weight range. The findings suggest that the BMI scale might not be appropriate for elderly people and should be age-adjusted, UPI reported.
