Study: Evaluate foster children for asthma

Respiratory Care Weekly, May 17, 2006

Experts say that many of the 600,000 children who end up in the U.S. foster care system have neglectful parents who don't address the youngsters' mental or physical health. Among the undiagnosed health problems they might have, asthma ranks high on the list, according to study in the May Journal of Health Care for the Poor and Underserved.

Some 45% of these children are asthma candidates, having been exposed to people using drugs, alcohol, smoking, and other unhealthy environments early in life. To compound matters, caregivers don't always report the condition. As a result, when healthcare providers see a foster child, they should take extra time to check for chronic conditions, especially asthma, reported the Journal.
