Part D initial enrollment period ends

Physician Practice Advisor, May 17, 2006

Medicare beneficiaries rushed to sign up for prescription drug coverage as the initial enrollment period for Medicare's Part D program came to a close on Monday, May 15, according to a report by the Detroit Free Press.

About 37 million of the 43 million people eligible for Medicare have some form of drug coverage, either through stand-alone drug plans, Medicare Advantage, private or federal retirement plans, the Veterans Affairs Department, or union plans, according to the article.

Medicare beneficiaries who missed Monday's deadline-as many as 2.7 million people-may have to pay extra and wait until November to enroll in the program.
