Massachusetts posts surgeons' volume statistics online
E-Health Trend Watch, May 12, 2006
The Massachusetts Executive Office of Health and Human Services has added volume information for 10 inpatient surgeries to its healthcare cost and quality Web site. The state's Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Timothy Thomas said the numbers provide consumers with the information that volume and quality are linked. Massachusetts Medical Society President Alan Harvey disagreed. Harvey said the information could be misleading to consumers and that the link between volume and quantity has only been proved for three of the procedures listed on the site.
