Study uncovers smoking-cessation trends
Respiratory Care Weekly, May 10, 2006
A study of 174,000 U.S. adults reported in the July issue of the American Journal of Health Promotion breaks down the smoking-cessation trends among the adult population. It found that 36% of patients with COPD currently smoke, compared to 22% of Americans not diagnosed with COPD.
Here's the part that might hit RTs hardest: 23% of smokers with COPD reported not getting smoking-cessation advice from a healthcare professional in the past year. Almost half of the COPD patient population reported trying to quit in the last year, and 29% of the quitters succeeded, reported the American Journal of Health Promotion.
