HIPAA-mandated NPI bulk enumeration begins this month
Ambulatory Surgery Reimbursement Update, May 9, 2006
Healthcare organizations can now begin submitting applications for the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA)-mandated national provider identifiers (NPI) on behalf of their providers via electronic file interchange, CMS announced May 1. The process - also known as bulk enumeration - allows organizations to submit multiple provider applications in a single electronic file. This saves providers the hassle of applying individually for the identifier.
Interested organizations can obtain information about electronic file interchange from the CMS Web site by clicking here. Before participating in bulk enumeration, organizations must receive certification and approval from CMS.
Info on certification is available by clicking here.
