DM program gets high marks from participants
Healthcare Strategist Trend Watch, May 5, 2006
One Southeastern Pennsylvania health insurer's disease management program not only improved its members' health and saved them money, but also earned the organization high satisfaction ratings.
Philadelphia-based Independence Blue Cross's (IBC) disease management program supports people with diabetes, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, congestive heart failure, and coronary artery disease. More than 235,000 of IBC's members have at least one of the five illnesses, and 98% percent of them participate in the program.
An IBC survey of members with chronic conditions found:
· 94% were satisfied with the help and support they received through the program
· 90% felt that speaking with a health coach improved the quality of care they received from their doctor
· 74% reported that speaking with a health coach improved their ability to talk to their physicians
Among the features of IBC's Connections Health Management Program: round-the-clock access to specially trained healthcare professionals, educational materials, health reminders, and access to an encyclopedia of health information.
