Rhode Island LPN: 'I repeatedly checked resident'
LTC Liability Monitor, May 4, 2006
Accused of criminally neglecting a SNF resident, a licensed practical nurse (LPN) in Providence testified this week that she never noticed anything wrong with the resident during repeated checks, according to The Boston Globe. The 93-year-old resident died in the summer of 2004 following complications from a respiratory ailment. Co-workers at Oakland Grove Health Care Center told prosecutors the LPN, Gloria Baillargeon, ignored requests to provide the resident oxygen, and that she didn't call an ambulance in time to save the resident's life. Baillargeon said she checked on the resident several times during her shift and found her sleeping peacefully.
Another nurse said the resident was suffering visibly throughout the night, and that Baillargeon told her to "shut up" and hit her when she requested Baillargeon do something. Oakland Grove's administrator and director of nursing face lesser neglect charges, the Globe reported.
