APTA offers tips for proper biking

Rehab Private Practice Alert, May 3, 2006

The American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) says PTs should consider educating their patients on proper bicycle riding posture and techniques as the warm weather approaches, reported The Seattle Times.

The APTA says incorrect usage of bicycles can lead to overuse injuries that can cause pain primarily in the knees, neck, and back.

Common riding errors include allowing the saddle to sit too high or low, adjusting the handlebar reach too long or too short, and having the wrong pedal alignment, according to the Times.

The APTA also recommends PTs instruct patients on some general conditioning and stretching exercises to loosen up the hamstrings, quadriceps, and glutes, the primary muscles used during bicycle riding.
