AMA pushes for medical liability reform

Physician Practice Advisor, May 3, 2006

The American Medical Association (AMA) has launched a national grassroots advertising campaign focusing on passing medical liability reform in the U.S. Senate, according to an AMA press release. The campaign is intended to muster support for S.22, a bill that would cap medical liability damages.

The Senate is expected to vote on S.22 during Health Week-a week set aside to address the top problems facing healthcare-in early May.

The campaign will rely on print, television, and Internet ads to convey the AMA's message that escalating jury awards and settlements force physicians to limit services or retire early, which seriously impedes patient access to care. National medical liability reform is the AMA's top legislative priority, according to the press release.
