Medical schools seek to increase enrollment

Physician Practice Advisor, May 3, 2006

Medical schools are increasingly pursuing innovative ways to boost enrollment levels to respond to a physician shortage that is expected to worsen in coming years, according to a survey by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC).

Of the 116 medical school surveyed, 40% indicated they had already increased their enrollment and another 16% said they would possibly do so. Many of the schools attempting to increase enrollment were in states currently confronting physician shortages (e.g., Kentucky, Texas, Oregon, etc.).

Current enrollment increases alone may still not be enough to meet the growing demand for doctors in the next few decades, according to an AAMC press release.
