CPOE adoption remains slow

E-Health Trend Watch, April 28, 2006

According to the latest counts of two key information technology market watchers, the number of hospitals that have installed computerized physician order entry (CPOE) systems remains small. Slow growth is likely due to cost as well as the complexity of these systems, making universal adoption of CPOE an unrealistic expectation. During the past decade, scholars have supported CPOE adoption as a way to reduce medical records. Other studies, however, believe that the systems also have the potential to introduce medical errors.
