The right note to promote kidney disease awareness
Healthcare Strategist Trend Watch, April 28, 2006
A new public awareness campaign that aims to educate African Americans about chronic kidney disease, its warning signs, and the importance of early treatment will be headlined by gospel singer Byron Cage. The program, dubbed "Strength in Harmony," includes concerts, educational events, and an informational Web site, www.strengthinharmony.com.
More than 30% of people treated for kidney failure in the U.S. are African American. Risk factors include diabetes or high blood pressure and a family history of kidney disease.
Strength in Harmony is a joint project of pharmaceutical company Ortho Biotech Products and the COSHAR Foundation, a nonprofit organization that focuses on health education through faith-based initiatives. It is also supported by a coalition of organizations, including the American Kidney Fund.
